Space-Saving Ideas for Small Kitchens - Some Tips When You’re on a Renovation Budget

Small kitchens and indeed bathrooms will always be a battling space for most people that don’t live alone and especially if you have a family. Modern kitchen designers have found many new ways to maximise your space, but most of these ways will involve a major renovation with perhaps the removal or addition of a door to access a pantry or storage room, or by the use of customs cabinetry. Both these elements will work incredibly well but will seriously increase your budget. Let’s look at some space-saving ideas that won’t cost a fortune.

Get Hooked

As long as you don't mind having everything on display for a busy rustic-looking vibe, then the less expensive but amazing custom cabinetry you have will meet your budget. Hooks are cheap and you can hang pans, brushes, mops and chopping boards as well as your decor. Simple. Cheap. Effective.

Don’t Get De-Railed

Rails will work as well as hooks, especially in corners from the ends of cabinets but as well as in front of windows that you don’t need to open or have blinds you need to access. They can hold larger items as they’re stronger. Tops of doors is another good location.

Watch Those Corners

Using hanging rails or shelves in corners is a great way to use wasted space. Even if it’s not very accessible, you can still use it for plants or decor.

Fill That Sill

Window sills, especially high or small ones shouldn’t be wasted. The same applies to corners (above). Use sills for plants, cookbooks, decor or herbs, but don’t waste the space.

Hang a Pegboard

These aren't everyone's cup-of-tea, much like a handyman toolshed wall, a pegboard can store knives, pans, lids, utensils etc, savings space on draws and cabinets. They can easily be configured and reconfigured for whatever you own too.

Use a Fold Down Table

This has some negative throwback connotations to the 70s like a pegboard does, but again, if done right, modern styling and designs can make them quite novel and modern. Having a table where there wasn’t previously space for one is a huge bonus in a small kitchen. Use it when you want, and no wasted space when you don't.

Use Shelves Instead of Cabinets

Shelves are great as long as they aren’t too deep. Deep shelves mean moving a lot of stuff around and possibly falling off to get to the back, narrow shelves on a wall that can only accommodate narrow shelves suddenly mean you have saved lots of cabinet space. Used wisely, shelves can save you a lot of money and give you a lot of extra storage.
